I present you an article dedicated to the phone settings I made to better capture the Northern Lights. These are just my ideas so any other ideas you have or anything you've tried, leave them in the comments to help as many people as possible.
At the moment, I have an iPhone 14 pro and a phone tripod. The apps that I have used repeatedly are HelloAurora and MyAuroraForecast. They have a really good accuracy, they have a map of the aurora where it is, the probability of clouds, KP index and the possibility of aurora at your location.
Also take a look at Windy which I think is among the best weather apps in general. More often than not, what was mentioned there was also outside. So for clouds, for example, or snowfall, check more apps.
The conditions that I have pursued for the aurora:
The sky should be as clear as possible, with as few clouds as possible, and if it's perfectly clear, the chances are close to 100%
Try looking for places on Google Maps that are as far away as possible from the bright lights of a city. In Finland we drove about 2 hours north into the wilderness, and in Norway we specifically looked for accommodation as remote as possible for better chances.
The best places are known to be near lakes or fjords and not to have too many trees around.
Consider the full moon. It's very powerful when there are no houses around you and you may not be able to see the aurora as well.
Check the KP index, and not just once in the evening, but several times at different times! In aurora apps, the KP index is the most important. Likewise you can watch live Youtube cameras from different nearby locations to see if it has appeared or not. Another site you can follow is this one https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast.
For phone's settings
I think a tripod is necessary, although I've taken pictures without one, but they came out shakier. Photo mode should be on NIGHT and the exposure should be as large as your phone allows.
During videos I used Timelapse with the longest exposure my phone would give me. If you don't use the tripod, you have to hold the phone as still as possible. The tripod also helps in that you can turn on the movie/photo and you're enjoying the show on the sky.
A very important thing! Really look at the sky! I was extremely skeptical when I read that the aurora cannot be seen with the naked eye. You can see it, and sometimes you can see it very well! If the KP index is as high as possible, automatically the aurora can be seen more clearly in the sky.
In Norway, we had a full moon and KP index of 3 and we saw a beautiful aurora moving overhead and we had moments of amazement at how well it could be seen in the sky!
